DiCE - Digital Health in a Circular Economy

Circular ecosystem on electronic waste from healthcare

In DICE, 20 partners from 9 countries are working together on a new concept to recycle electronic waste from (digital) health devices such as smart medication packaging. The consortium, led by Janssen Pharmaceutica, is supported by the Horizon Europe program.

What is DiCE?

The use of digital healthcare technologies, such as smart pillboxes, and wearable biosensors escalated in recent years. Innovation in healthcare has enabled great progress, but it has come with increased electronic waste generation. Digital healthcare devices contain valuable raw materials that are essential to the European economy.  A new approach is needed at EU-level to facilitate the re-use, refurbishment and recycling of the products to ensure long-term sustainable use of these raw materials.

The DiCE (Digital Health in the Circular Economy) project aims to address this. It focusses on extending the lifetime of digital healthcare devices by developing and piloting solutions across the whole product life-cycle. Central: How do we reduce the environmental impact of medical e-waste and develop circular solutions to recycle components of digital health devices?
