Nannochloropsis gaditana

Nannochloropsis gaditana is a small, single-celled green microalga with a cell size of approximately 2 to 4 µm. The alga is known for the production of PUFA's (Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids), a high fat content, particularly under nitrogen deficiency, and the accumulation of various carotenoids. This microalga is primarily produced for the aquaculture market and has potential applications in the cosmetic and nutraceutical industries.

Versatile applications

Nannochloropsis gaditana is a marine alga extensively cultivated for applications in aquaculture due to its excellent nutritional properties for various aquatic species, including fish. This alga is particularly renowned for its high production of omega-3 fatty acids, which play an essential role in a healthy diet. Currently, this alga has not been approved for human consumption in Europe, although it is permitted in China. The alga is already widely sold as 'phytoplankton' for both animal and human nutrition. In addition to its high concentration of fatty acids, this alga can also produce various interesting pigments in high concentrations, such as astaxanthin, zeaxanthin, and canthaxin.

A broad temperature range

N. gaditana can thrive across a broad temperature range and can survive at both lower and higher temperatures. In our pilot studies, we successfully cultivated this alga at temperatures ranging from 10 to 40°C. However, above 40°C, it becomes increasingly challenging to keep the algae alive. At temperatures below 10°C, the alga remains alive but exhibits minimal growth. The optimal temperature for cultivating this alga lays between 23 and 30°C.
